#25    Hose Nozzles (also referred to as “Branches”)

A variety of nozzles provide different water streams that are needed for various fire situations. The early nozzles were made of brass because of their high strength, low rusting tendency, lighter weight compared to other metals at the time, and ease to make. Most of these early nozzles didn’t have a shut-off handle on them like modern nozzles. This meant that if the water was to be turned off, the firefighter would either yell or run to the apparatus to turn it off.

Some of the more advanced (and expensive) nozzles were able to change the pattern of the water stream like modern nozzles, but weighed a lot more and were more complicated to build and maintain.
