#9 High Pressure Hydrant
This hydrant was used on a downtown street corner from the 1930s–1950s and as connected to the high-pressure system.
This system pumped water in downtown Winnipeg at 110 psi and could be raised to 300 psi by order of the chief within five minutes, from the James Avenue Pump Station. (A regular hydrant had approximately 65 psi.)
The system was in service from 1906-1986 and was fed by massive 36-inch diameter pipes to four stationary pumps located at the James Avenue pump station, each rated at 1,800 gallons per minute. The high-pressure system was one of two high-pressure water systems known to exist in North America.
