#5 The Alex Logan Steamer
This 1882 horse-drawn Ronald steam pumper weighs 9000 lbs, and is named after former Winnipeg Mayor Alexander “Sandy” B. Logan (1879-1880).
Built in Brussels, Ontario, Canada by John B. Ronald, the vertical water tube boiler provided steam to power a pumping engine to force water at 800 gallons per minute through the hoses at 120 psi onto fires in Winnipeg from 1882-1921. It was actually the first steamer purchased by the Winnipeg Fire Department as an effort to upgrade the fleet after the department’s official formation.
Among the first major fires fought by the Alex Logan steamer in 1882 were at the Bank of Montreal building and the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) offices. It was also used to extinguish a major fire at the Ashdown Warehouse in 1883.
The Alex Logan was used in regular service up until 1918, when it had come to be used as a spare pumper for three more years when other apparatus were out of service for repair or maintenance.
