#26 2nd Floor Sitting Room
The upstairs common sitting room had a family atmosphere when this station was in service. It was used by firefighters to rest and recover, and was also used to enjoy meals brought to the station by their families before a kitchen was built in the station. The piano was used for entertainment before television was available.
Before the 1919 strike, Winnipeg firefighters lived almost full time in the fire halls. They got one hour off a day to go out and eat as there was no room for a kitchen with the horses and stables in the station. Married men would get one day off each week, while unmarried men got half a day off every week.
Currently, Winnipeg firefighters work four shifts followed by four days off.
