Self-Guiding Tour

#6   1928 LaFrance Pump

This truck is a 1928 Type 144 LaFrance Foamite pumper and was built in Toronto for the price of $15,500.

It served Winnipeg from 1928 to 1963, originally labelled as Pumper No. 8. This was one of the last right-hand drive trucks purchased by the department and was the first of three trucks to feature pneumatic (air filled) tires. This truck is able to pump 625 gpm / 2900 lpm with a 70-horsepower, 6-cylinder engine.

It was used during the 1950 Winnipeg flood to pump water over the dykes for three weeks.

Although the truck has only two seats, it had a crew of four; meaning two of the firefighters had to stand on the tailboard on the back of the truck. Yet, those firefighters were surprisingly safe.

In the 1990s, this truck was refurbished to its original condition with the help of volunteers.
