Self-Guiding Tour
#3 1882 Hand-Drawn Hose Reel Wagon
Designed to be steered from behind by two men, while four to six others ran ahead pulling it by a rope. Bear in mind that these carts could weigh hundreds of pounds when loaded with hose, and there were no paved roads for those wooden wheels to smoothly roll down in all four seasons of the year.
Winnipeg’s water supply was notoriously poor prior to 1907, so after pushing/ pulling the heavy cart, hooking up the hose to the hydrant, and laying it to the fire, there was a very good chance no water would come out.
